The laws pertaining to pepper spray in the state of Michigan changed in 2010. Prior to 2010, pepper spray was illegal, and only CS gas was legal, with a concentration of not more than 2%.

Current Michigan (MI) state law allows for any pepper spray type with a maximum pepper concentration of 10%, and 35 grams in size.

Michigan Pepper Spray Law - Legal Statute
-MCL 750.224d Not more than 35 grams of any combination of orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile and inert ingredients (CS gas); or A solution containing not more than 10% oleoresin capsicum (pepper spray) and is used in the protection of your person or property which would justify the use of physical force. It cannot be sold to a minor.

-MCL 750.224 Under the statute and according to an Attorney General's opinion, a private citizen cannot possess tear gas or mace.
